This winter I have done several unprecedented things: 1) bought (and wear incessantly) a cozy bathrobe 2) wore pants. A lot. I hate pants of all kinds so this says volumes about the terrible Michigan winter we have had and 3) learned how to crochet. Yes, I have finally unleashed my inner retiree and I kinda love her.
It's just that I feel most myself in that demographic. Be it the early bird special at local restaurants or mid-morning matinees, you can often find Warren and me kicking it very old school style. So, to celebrate the fifth year of this blog's existence and to not-so-humble-brag about my new obsession with crocheting, I am giving away a lovely sedge-stitched crochet cowl to one of my dear readers! Hooray!
To enter the giveaway, tell me your favorite (or least favorite) part about winter in the comments section. Easy Peasy. If you are able, I would also appreciate it if you could help spread the word by sharing it on some form of social media--Pinterest, Facebook, Twitter, a little shout out on your blog., etc. But no worries if you can't. Since I work best under pressure (doesn't everyone?), I'll put a deadline on the whole thing: how does Monday, March 18th at 5 PM sound? That gives you about a week. Then I'll use some technology magic to choose a random winner and I'll let you know who won on Wednesday, March 20th. Can't wait to see who this lovely gem goes to--and may the odds be ever in your favor!

*I used Aesthetic Nest's lovely Sedge Stitch Cowl Tutorial as the base for this cowl (her pattern makes a smaller but very lovely cowl). If you crochet (or would like to begin crocheting) Aesthetic Nest has some wonderful tutorials and patterns. I'm especially delighted with her Learn How to Crochet Tutorials.

My favorite part about winter is enjoying homemade hot cocoa (Kip's mother's recipe) and cheese toast. My least favorite? Shoveling. My arms are still sore from the other day and I was only out there for about ten minutes before I gave up and told Kip, "Good luck with the rest!" So there you have it.
ReplyDeleteI am so very impressed by your crocheting skills! Winning this would probably be the highlight of my year so far... I am keeping my fingers crossed!

ReplyDeleteWinter is only good before Christmas. :) Kevin wants us to become a skiing family, so then maybe I'll change my tune. Until then, I hate being trapped indoors. You in pants truly is shocking...we might need some photo documentation.
ReplyDeleteWarren looks like he belongs at the Constitutional Convention with his cowl-wig. I'm expecting a great Halloween costume in a few months.
I'm actually really excited for this coming winter. My husband and I just bought a new house that's being built from scratch. How many people get to say that? It should be done by the end of summer which means I get to put up a real tree this year and a real wreath on my door! We will also have - get this - a REAL fireplace!!!! I'm seriously peeing my pants excited about smelling pine and wood for months on end. Ah... love it!

ReplyDeleteAwesome, thank you so much! I don't have Twitter but one of these days I know I'll cave :)
DeleteWhat don't I like about winter, let me count the ways. . . bundling kids, no sunshine, stuck indoors, cold, I could go on. You're so talented, and I especially like how it looks on Warren. I'll throw this out on fb too!
ReplyDeleteI love your mastery of crocheting!!! I am being selfish and hoping I win the scarf!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite thing about winter is cuddling with my puppy-dog. She hates to snuggle in the summer months. My least favorite thing about winter is the lack of daylight. Vegas pretends to be on PST when really it should be on Mountain.
I love you to bits!!!
Soo cute, I love the crocheted genius going on here! My favorite thing about winter is probably.... good smells in a warm house. If you bake gingerbread or fudge in the middle of summer, you'll get a lot of funny looks (or sniffs I guess). Winter just smells delicious. :) And my least favorite thing is trying to jam a bundled up toddler into a carseat (think michelin man here). :)
ReplyDeleteMy favorite thing about winter is sitting down on Sunday nights to watch PBS Masterpiece with hot chocolate and toast.
ReplyDeleteHow did I not know you had a blog?! Expect to find me here frequently from here on out.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite part of winter is the sunny days that come after the snow storms where we get to go out and actually play in the snow instead of huddling inside.
yes please!
ReplyDeletemy favorite thing about winter? that it's not summer. i hate summer. and i love down comforters and fire places and generally snuggly things--as well as the fierce bite of frigid air. (i know, it's weird, but see my feelings about summer.)
My favorite thing about winter is going home to see my family at Christmas time and drinking lots and lots of hot chocolate. I'm living the mid 20s single life in Chicago and as much as I love the city and going to graduate school, I miss my family a lot. Other than that, winter is not my favorite. Bring on spring and fall (we can skip summer)!
ReplyDeleteP.S. Amy, your blog is darling. Glad to have found it!
It is hard to think about the good things about winter right now I must admit. It feels so tense, like I have been crouching my shoulders for 4 months. I am ready to relax, to feel warm air on my skin, and to bake my bones in the sun. That being said, I think winter does have gems to be mined and it is not all hands stuck in pockets and back hunched over. I love when it snows big fuzzy flakes and they swirl all around back and forth and up as well as down. Look, the neighborhood turned into a giant snow globe! (I just hope not to have to drive in it!)
ReplyDeleteGrowing up in AZ, I didn't really understand what the seasons were about. I looked longingly at picturesque falls, cozy winters, and exuberant springs, and I wondered how wonderful life could be. And then I moved east. And I'll admit, falls are a many-splendored thing. But all the rest GAG ME. First off, it rains. Like, all the time. And people are always, like, "Yeah, it's the rainy season." But they say that ALL YEAR LONG. And people: winter is COLD. Like cold winds, icy streets, frozen tips of noses and fingers. And all for what? There are some that say how pretty a fresh layer of snow is. They are fooling themselves. All snow means is backed up traffic and that the bottom of my pants are going to be soaked through.
ReplyDeleteAll that said, winter means I have an excuse not to exercise. So there's that. And also Christmas. That's a good thing. And snow days.
i haven't seen real snow winters in a few years so i'll say my favorite part of winter is christmas and being able to see family!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite thing about winter is looking out the window at all of the miserable people freezing their behinds off walking to the school next door with their kids, while I kick my kids unceremoniously out the door to trudge through the snow on their own.
